Glycol System - Topping Up
Safety steps and process for topping up the 333 glycol system, including target dilution and reservoir levels.
Before Working on the Glycol System
- Turn off both pumps on the chiller unit.
- Turn off temp control on all tanks.
- Do not close any valves on the roof (don't seal the system) - as glycol warms, it expands and can cause fittings to burst.
Reference Notes
- Target dilution for the 333 system is -5 (44%). Note (6/27/25): -5 reads as 41%, -10 reads as 44%. Take samples from the red sample valve above the brewery door.
- The glycol reservoir holds 100 gal; the pipes hold an additional 120 gal.
- The sight tube is 18.5", equal to 5.4 gal/inch.
- "Pure" glycol arrives at 76% dilution unless otherwise noted (double-check this against the current supplier). Dowfrost 99 from Cleanedge is about 95% pure.
Topping Up
- One person should watch the sight glass level on the chiller reservoir from the roof; a second person manages the pump by FV6.
- Connect the pump's output hose to the jacket access TC fitting on FV6, and the other end into the glycol source.
- Confirm temps are set so jackets turn on and the solenoids to the glycol system are open, allowing glycol to flow freely into and out of the system.
- Open valves and let glycol prime the pump by running backward through the system. Drain glycol from the system if needed to reach the proper dilution.
- Submerge the input hose in the glycol being added.
- Set the pump to 45-50 Hz and turn it on.
- Turn the chiller pumps back on and let the system run for 30-45 minutes before turning tanks back on. Wait until the brewery glycol readout is back below 40 before turning tanks on.
- Keep the glycol reservoir above 85% full (top of the sight glass) to keep air out of the system and keep it running efficiently.
- Log inputs and notes in the Glycol Tracker sheet.
If something goes wrong
If tank temps won't hold after topping up, don't seal any roof valves to "fix" it - recheck reservoir level and dilution first, then flag it if it's still off.
