Brewery Support and Shop Safety SOP

Required PPE, hazardous materials, and equipment safety procedures for anyone working in the brewery support area or shop.

Overview

Threes Brewing maintains a healthy and safe workplace for all employees, and has implemented this program to prevent injuries and disease. All employees are required to follow company guidelines and SOPs to keep the working environment safe. Everyone, including management, is responsible and accountable for the company's overall safety - active participation by everyone, every day, in every job matters. Management supports the program by providing proper equipment, training, and procedures; employees are responsible for following procedures, working safely, and improving safety measures wherever possible.

Lifting and Moving Materials

Anyone working in Brewery Support or the Shop must wear the following PPE when lifting and moving materials or product: a back brace/support, steel-toed work boots, safety glasses, and protective gloves. Threes provides back braces, gloves, and glasses - these can be found in the Brewery, Shop, or 225 Warehouse.

Always lift half-kegs with assistance from another employee - never alone. Always get help when stacking kegs on top of each other.

Line Cleaning PPE

Anyone cleaning draft lines must wear: safety glasses, chemical/heat-resistant work gloves, steel-toed work boots, and long cotton pants or a jumpsuit. Threes provides the safety glasses, gloves, and jumpsuit - these can be found in designated locations in the brewery. See the Line Cleaning procedure for the full cleaning process.

Hazardous Products and Substances

Threes uses several hazardous substances in brewery operations:

Safety data sheets for these materials are kept in the brewery. Required PPE when handling them: safety glasses, steel-toed work boots, and chemical/heat-resistant gloves.

Equipment Use and Lockout

No employee may use brewery equipment without proper training from brewery personnel, including emergency and lockout procedures.

Lockout/tagout (LOTO) refers to the control of hazardous energy. When workers perform maintenance on brewery equipment, accidental start-up or unintended release of stored energy is a serious risk - a common OSHA citation involves the practices needed to disable machinery to prevent unexpected startup during service or maintenance. Always turn off the brewhouse before entering the mash tun or kettle.

Emergency Equipment

A first aid kit is located underneath the main bar. There is one fire extinguisher in the brewery, and a fire exit located at the back of the main bar (exit toward the yard).

Forklift Operators

Anyone who operates the forklift is required to watch this safety video first: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sk7rOPKr6HY

If something goes wrong

If you're ever unsure whether you have the right PPE or training for a task, stop and ask before proceeding - don't guess with brewery equipment or chemicals.
